I was reading a technique that concept artists use to create futuristic city scapes and so I wanted to try it out myself. Part of it was matte painting and the other part was basic layout as Feng Zhu does – starting out with chaos. If you youtube his videos, they are highly enjoyable and mesmerizing as he is sooo good at what he does, it’s almost impossible to think one can do the same thing, but he really does walk through the big steps of his workflow so other artists can understand better how concept art works.
This piece took me 4 hours to complete, a lot slower than wanted, but most of it was a learning process and I’m happy to understand how to execute this sci fi kind of style now. It’s like learning the blur tool in photoshop for beginners. From then on, everyone wants to blur everything and anything in any way possible. My mind is a bit burnt out from learning this technique but hopefully I’ll be able to produce more complex and highly detailed cityscapes in less time in the future.
